HASSELL won a national competition for the urban design of 1.5 kilometres of waterfront. The $6m redevelopment of Margate's Foreshore and streetscape has transformed a vehicle-dominated beachfront into a pedestrian orientated destination for residents and visitors. The design included proposals for the upgrading of tree planting, a series of viewing pavilions, boardwalk, pedestrian/cycle access, traffic calming, car parking and dune restoration. Further, the master plan identifies options for stabilising beach erosion problems including the construction of a series of headlands incorporating recreation facilities.
