HASSELL has completed design and documentation of four underground stations as part of the new $2.25b rail line between Epping and Chatswood in Sydney. The layout of the stations and the form of the caverns respond to the priorities of maximising passenger amenity, ensuring safe passenger movement, achieving clear and direct wayfinding; maximising daylight penetration and eliminating fire and safety risks. The stations feature double height underground platform caverns tunnelled in Hawkesbury Sandstone. The expansive entry caverns are open to the sky with glazed canopies to bring daylight deep into the stations. The project is due to be completed in 2008.
