Canberra's cultural life has been enhanced through this intimate venue for live theatre performances in the heart of the city. Designed by HASSELL with Butterworth Russell in a format that recalls the Shakespearean tradition of interactive performance, the three level theatre takes a circular drum form to allow maximum contact between actor and audience. The bold geometric forms of the building respond to the urban design objectives formulated by the National Capital Authority for Vernon Circle and Capital Hill. The interior of the theatre is timber lined, utilising a three dimensional pattern of panels to ensure effective acoustics. Within a limited budget, the theatre has been acclaimed as one of Australia's leading performance venues. |
