The former Albion Explosives Factory site is being developed for residential and business uses over the next ten years. The system of parks and open spaces now under construction at Cairnlea is one of the most extensive of any new development in Melbourne. With some 132 hectares, they constitute nearly 30% of the total site area.
The lakes and wetlands provide over 16 hectares of new habitats for waterbirds, fish and other fauna. It also stores water for the irrigation system for local parks within the development, saving the consumption of mains water and ensuring sustainable green parks throughout Cairnlea.
