HASSELL Designed Airport Receives Carbon Neutral Certification

HASSELL with local partners Warren and Mahoney, is designing a new generation of integrated terminals that lock into the aquifer below the Canterbury Plains. The difference in temperature (5 degrees warmer in winter, 5 degrees cooler in summer) is perfect to use as a replacement for traditional chiller technology. The efficiency of the aquifer is 12:1, meaning you get 12 times more energy that you put into the system. This is in line with the work recently carried out by CIAL which has enabled the airport to become the first carbon neutral airport in the Southern Hemisphere, receiving the carbonNZero (CertTM) certification from Landcare Research.

The demolition and total reconstruction of the domestic terminal will provide Christchurch International Airport with international standard facilities to service the growing New Zealand air travel market. The development consists on the new terminal, offices, a multi-storey car park, landscaping and airside works.

Established in 2001 by Landcare Research, the carbonNZero program is based on over a decade of research in greenhouse gas measurement and carbon monitoring. The program is an internationally recognised greenhouse gas certification scheme for organisations, products, services and events wishing to demonstrate climate change action with the highest integrity.
